Abstract: This research takes qualitative and experimental approaches together
to make visible the computing education experiences of Black women students at Historically Black Colleges/Universities (HBCUs), and to co-design and pilot iterative learning interventions based on knowledge produced to illustrate the potential of these experiences in re-imagining the bounds of computing education. As Black women students and professionals are one group impacted by disparities and inadequate support in the larger push for CS education expansion, this work engages pressing questions in an endeavor to create
equitable and empowering learning environments that recognize and build upon the unique experiences of this demographic at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). Situated at the nexus of learning sciences and HCI studies, this work adopts an interdisciplinary conceptual and methodological approach to produce several contributions for research on the social realities of
Black women computing students, advancing practices for the design-based research (DBR) methodology of social design-based experimentation (SDBE), and realizing implications for learner-centered design practices for CS education research.
